We travel to expand our horizons, be inspired and enrich our lives through immersing ourselves in other cultures.
We believe that travel should also always enrich the lives and environment of the people and places that we visit.
Travel that gives back
Why I’ve Fallen in Love with Slow Travel by Rail
There’s something truly special about slowing down. In a world where travel often feels like a race from one destination to the next, discovering the art of slow travel—especially by rail—has completely changed the way I see the world.
Recently, I had the privilege of joining the TTG Sustainable Travel Ambassadors trip to Switzerland via Paris, in partnership with Intrepid Travel. Within just a day, I knew I’d become a slow travel convert. The journey itself was nothing short of magical—filled with wow moments, meaningful connections, and the kind of ease that makes every mile a joy.
The Joy of the Journey
What makes rail travel so captivating is how it turns the journey into an experience in its own right. There are no airport queues, no rush through terminals, no frantic searches for gates. Instead, you simply settle into your seat, gaze out of the window, and let the scenery unfold—like watching a moving painting.
Our journey began with an overnight stop in Paris, a perfect prelude of art, light, and café culture. From there, we glided smoothly towards Switzerland, crossing borders effortlessly as the French countryside gave way to rolling hills, vineyards, and those first glimpses of Lake Geneva.
Arriving in Lausanne, we were greeted by a relaxed elegance—the kind of place where every lakeside stroll feels like a moment to breathe. We wandered through its charming streets, soaking up both the culture and the calm that defines Swiss life.
On day 3, we took a short rail journey to Chillon Castle and wow just wow! Perched gracefully on the edge of Lake Geneva, Chillon Castle is the kind of place that feels lifted straight from a fairytale. With its medieval towers reflected in shimmering blue waters and the Alps rising in the distance, it’s no wonder this iconic Swiss landmark has inspired poets and painters for centuries. Here we wandered through grand halls, secret passageways, and lakeside courtyards, where you feel history come alive in one of Switzerland’s most enchanting settings.
Through the Heart of Switzerland
The next leg to Lucerne was just as enchanting. The train wound its way through storybook villages, emerald valleys, and snow-dusted peaks in the distance—a moving postcard of alpine beauty.
And then, there was Mount Rigi. Known as the “Queen of the Mountains”. Once the cloud had lifted it offered panoramic views that felt even more rewarding knowing we’d arrived there slowly, savoring every stage of the journey rather than rushing to the summit.
It was in those quiet moments—watching sunlight dance across the lakes, or hearing the gentle hum of the train on the tracks—that I realized what makes slow travel so meaningful. It allows you to arrive fully, not just physically, but emotionally too.
Why Slow Travel Matters
Slow travel isn’t just about taking your time—it’s about traveling mindfully. You become more connected to the places you visit, more attuned to local rhythms, and more appreciative of the journey itself.
It’s also a more sustainable way to explore, leaving a lighter footprint while supporting responsible tourism. Traveling by rail through Europe is not only efficient and comfortable, but also one of the most environmentally friendly ways to see the continent.
For me, it’s the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and purpose—proof that sometimes, the best journeys are the ones that take their time.
Your Perfect Journey by Rail
Whether it’s gliding past lakes in Switzerland, winding through the vineyards of France, or exploring hidden corners of Europe at your own pace, rail travel offers a timeless way to rediscover the joy of the journey.
If you’re ready to embrace slow travel and experience the world in a more meaningful way, I’d love to help you plan your perfect journey by rail.
Because sometimes, the best part of travel isn’t just where you’re going—it’s how you get there. 🚆✨
